Welcome to Apaar (Altering Perceptions of Autism and Assisting in Rehabilitation.)

APAAR was established in March 2014 in a room in a rented house in Model Town, Jalandhar. Few weeks later we moved to a two storeyed shop in Chhoti Baradari which the owner kindly provided us rent free until July 2015. We moved to the Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences on 16 July ,2015 , thanks to the benevolence of their Director , Dr Kanwaljit Singh and the managing Committee. We are on the fourth foor with a 270 degree view through glass windows that fully cover two sides.
Gardening is therapeutic to us all. We launched an organic fruit orchard with 33 trees in three plots on the back of our building on March 14, 2018, World Sikh Environment Day. We also have small kitchen garden by windows inside our building- green sacks hold ajwain, palak, matar and other veggies. Clients water the orchard , mulch and weed per their preference.

GOLDEN RULES EFFECTIVE MARCH 14, 2020

APAAR staff and clients' health is our utmost priority in this difficult time for humanity- the greatest health threat of our generation: COVID-19.
On March 14, 2020, World Sikh Environment Day we launched these Golden Rules of conduct. We chose not to close APAAR as the risk of infection in Punjab is still low, and there are less than 20 persons at the APAAR sheltered workshop at a given time.

  • ENTER APAAR ONLY through medical college entrance
  • NO handshakes. NO hugs. NO touch at work and when meeting people anywhere.
  • DO NOT touch your face
  • Stay 6 feet from others at all time - LIMIT or avoid public transport
  • Wash hands well for 20 seconds many times a day . On entering APAAR at ALL times, use hand sanitizer (MUST have 60% alcohol, not herbs or Ayurvedic MEDS- ONLY 60% or greater strength alcohol is effective for hand disinfecting- DETTOL is fine- CLEAR-IT and similar brands are NOT effective- check label for 60% alcohol ). a. Rub on hands back and front with hand sanitizer- wait until dry before touching any surface
  • DO NOT SHARE food or utensils at all. Drink adequate fluids. Take once daily Vitamin C rich food- lemon juice in water, orange, and amla are some examples.
  • GO shopping in off hours – or less crowded times- do NOT go shopping for pleasure, only for essentials. AGAIN, help seniors with essential items. Call them on phone frequently and talk for a while- not just whether they need any goods. Spend time with them.
  • Use solution with any of these three -isopropyl alcohol, bleach or ammonia- to disinfect door and fridge knobs, stair railings and switches at home daily after your household help leaves. APAAR auto driver will be disinfecting auto handles and seats daily -day and afternoon. Reduce household help frequency of home visits in senior homes (over age 64)
  • Please help seniors stay home- anyone over age 64 should avoid going out, except for walks in the open air AWAY from any crowds.
  • Buy seniors their essential food items and medicines for them, check on your neighbours.
  • Use elbows or back of wrists to press lift buttons- avoid touching any surfaces in public places- NO walls/ STAIR railings.
  • If you have cold symptoms , cough or feel unwell, STAY HOME. Return to work when feel back to normal health. Civil Hospital , Jalandhar is the only facility that is testing for coronavirus after screening( Room 1, department of medicine). In Amritsar, Government Medical College is testing.
  • Sneeze or cough into elbow not on hand.
  • Keep windows of rooms open ALL DAY
